A Night on the Tiles

Gambling Online Magazine by Robert Blincoe March, 2009

Robert Blincoe goes into the deeper recesses of casino offerings and unearths the historical game of dominoes and discovers that it's finding new life online. You might remember dominoes as a game you learned as kid, or simple as a metaphor for a certain effect, but it's played at professional levels and shares a lot of similarities with poker. It's a game of skill and luck and, over time, the best player wins.

Live, the rewards aren't as great as in poker, but it's taken very seriously. At the World Domino Open Tournament held in Las Vegas at the end of 2008, there was $50,000 in prizes up for grabs with $10,000 going to first place. Severo Riestra of Venezuela won the individual event.

There are also attempts to get Hollywood glitz rubbing onto the game the way it has in poker. Last year the first Hollywood Domino Tournament was attended by Penelope Cruz, Charlize Threon, Salma Hayek, Demi Moore and Hugh Hefner.

But where it's taking off is online where plenty of money games are available. Game developer GameAccount has a version available trough its own Casinorip.com site as well as partners William Hill, Ladbrokes, Blue Square, Paddy Power and Sporting Bet. When it launched on Casinorip last September, it's reported that a staggering £100,000 was being wagered each week. GameAccount's version offers the only heads-up play against a live opponent or a bot, if you see a four-player game, or more, you've got to worry about collusion.

THE NUTS AND BOLTS

A set of dominoes is like a deck of cards in that there are many variations of the game, but as a refresher, we'll look at this classic 28-title draw form. Players take turns laying tiles onto a board with the objective to set down your own tiles before your opponent does. At the start, players are dealt seven of each and the remainder are left on the table face down in what is known as the 'boneyard'. Play continues until either a player has used his last title, or neither opponent can play a title and the boneyard is empty.

At the end of a round, remaining pips, or sports, are added up and the difference credited to the player with the least points.

If you want to make cash at dominoes, you've got to learn and appreciate the skills. Online, like poker, it's about focus and discipline. To defend against your opponent making big scores, you should try and get rid of your with high pip counts early. The same for doubles, where even the low-pip-count tiles are harder to play than other tiles .

Try and keep both ends of the board open to yourself, and try to play so that you've got a good spread of numbers to keep your options open. Watch your opponents' weaknesses. When they're force to draw from the bonayard, you know that they have no title matching either of the open ends. You should then play title to try to keep those same numbers at the end. Also, if your opponent has played at the same end of the board consecutively, he may be short on numbers corresponding to the other open end.

If you have many tiles of the same value, try to set this pip score up at one or both ends to force your opponent to draw.

By the end game, when the bonyard is empty, you should be able to work out what your opponent has. On the 28 tiles, each number 0 to 6 appears seven times, including the doubles.
You should work the numbers. There are 168 pips in total in the set. The average starting hand is around 42 points, so you know whether the tiles in your hand are higher or lower than the average. You can also add up the pips on the board, subtract from 168, subtract the value of your own hand, and have an idea of your opponent's score. And as with poker, you've got to ride out the variance caused by luck, and play to win the match (the game) not the round (the hand). Vary your aggressive and defensive play accordingly, and don't take risks when you don't need to.

Head-to-Head Blackjack

Head-to-head Blackjack – Beat your opponent not the dealer

Playing Blackjack at a traditional casino means you’re always trying to beat the house. The house has a slight advantage over the players and even though knowing how to play the game and using developed strategies will even your chances of beating the dealer, it’s the house who always wins. So, how is head-to-head Blackjack at Casinorip.com a different experience for the blackjack players?

Here are some points that will help you understand this unique game:
  • Two players sit at the blackjack table and decide the amount of money they will bet for each game.

  • Both players receive an equal amount of casino chips “dollars”.

  • In each game, the players will play through a pre-set number of rounds, one hand per round (5, 10 or 40-hands game)

  • In each round, both players will try to beat the dealer’s hand to build up their chip-stack.

  • To win any given round, players must beat the dealer’s hand by having a hand worth more in terms of combined face value, without going over a total of 21.

  • At the end of the last round, the player with the larger chip-stack wins the game and takes the money, not the dealer.

  • At this point you might be thinking “wait a minute, if I need to beat the dealer’s hand to build up my chip-stack, then I am playing against the house, aren’t I?” Well, here’s where things get interesting.
The first thing to note is that playing head-to-head Blackjack means that a real person always wins, not the house. This means that if you lose, your opponent will be taking your money, not the house. The second thing is that because you and your opponent start the game with an exact equal chip-stack and play a pre-set number of hands per game, winning is not determined by who wins more hands but rather who builds the larger chip stack.

To win, you’ll need a solid betting strategy as well as the basic blackjack strategy. Knowing how much to bet in each hand and when to Hit, Stand, or Double, will make the differences between winning and losing. This combination of skill and strategy means that a player could win a head-to-head blackjack game by winning only one out of the five hands, but this will depend on the players’ skills.

So now that you know why playing head-to-head Blackjack at Casinorip.com is The Smarter Way to Play, signup and put your skills to the test to take on your opponents!
